Born in Utrecht, Both stated in 1636 that he was twenty-four years old. He is recorded working in Rouen and Lyon before settling in Rome, by 1635. In the years 1639-41 he lived there with his younger brother, the landscape painter Jan Both. He drowned in Venice during the night of 23-4 March 1642 (the entry in the necrology reads ‘Adi 23 Marzo 1642 Andrea Boz fiamengo de ani 36 incirca anegado. S. Zuane Bragola’, Archivio di Stato di Venezia, Provv. Sanità, necrologio, anno 1642, busta n. 871).
A painting by Both of the same subject, related in composition but differing in all details, is in the Museum Bredius, The Hague; that is of similar size but on canvas.
