The present work is a fine and animated example of the skill Antonietta Brandeis had. In her typically small and detailed format, she has captured a familiar scene in an extremely charming manner. Two groups of figures walk in front of the church, one, seemingly a parent and child, are closely followed by a dog. Particularly striking is the reflection of the orange sail of the boat on the left-hand side of the composition.
Brandeis moved to Florence in the mid-to-late nineteenth century with her widowed mother. Here, she enjoyed great success within the Accademia di Belle Arte, where she enrolled as one of only two female students in 1867.
