PROVENANCE -

Miss Sara Huntington, 344 Washington Street, Norwich, Connecticut, by whom inherited from her sister, who before her death in c. 1908 had lent the painting to Mrs Louise A. Nicholson, 462 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, Mass.

Following the latter’s death in 1914 given by Miss Huntington to her son the Rev. George B. Nicholson, Rector of St. Mark’s Church, Center Street, Waterville, Maine, and by descent to the present owner (his daughter Mrs Stephen G. Bean delivered the painting for examination to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, on 20 April 1946, as Flemish School, 17th Century; 

W.G. Constable, the Curator of Paintings, wrote on 2 May 1946 that he considered it ‘French of the latter part of the seventeenth century … possibilities are Sebastien Bourdon and Charles LeBrun’).
